Managing Election Mis- and Disinformation
After the 2020 elections, major social media platforms pledged to combat disinformation more effectively. They began flagging or labeling posts with misleading content. However, in the face of pressure and backlash over allegations of anti-conservative bias, companies wavered on their content moderation decisions.
- Meta, YouTube, and Twitter reinstated the former president’s accounts.
- Facebook weighed banning all political ads ahead of 2024, but decided against it after Elon Musk vowed to turn rival Twitter into a free speech sanctuary.

Election Integrity in 2024
Key initiatives that social media companies are implementing or already have in place to support the integrity of the 2024 elections include the following:
- Meta says it will:
- Block new political ads a week before the election.
- Partner with fact-checking organizations to assess claims.
- Remove vote-suppressing and false voting information.
- Ask political advertisers to mark AI-generated content used in promoted content relating to social issues or elections. Failure to do so will lead to content removal.
- TikTok says it will:
- Delete misleading content.
- Guide search results toward accurate information.
- Decrease the visibility of false content on the platform.
- Ban political advertising.
- YouTube says it will prohibit content that could mislead users about voting methods or encourage disruptions to the democratic process. However:
- It has otherwise said little about how it will address 2024 election misinformation.
- In June, it revised its disinformation policy to allow videos that endorse false election claims on the platform, mirroring X’s 2022 position.
- X announced in September that it would cut its election integrity team, a month after declaring it would expand it.
- In August, the company stated that it will allow political advertising for the 2024 elections, reversing a decision in place since 2019.
